Vital to the traveller but little known is that a compass needle dips varying amounts depending on latitude. The dip known as ‘inclination’ will prevent a normal compass bought in the UK from working properly in, amongst other places, Australia, South America and most of Africa. Until recently manufacturers have had to make different compasses for different parts of the world.
